Running shoes have a shelf life, not just in miles, but in smell.
At some point, no matter how good they were out of the box, they turn. A mix of sweat, heat, and miles builds up into something you notice the second you take them off. And if you’ve ever left them in a car or by the door overnight, you’ll know exactly how bad it can get.
Most people just live with it. Or they try the usual fixes, sprays, stuffing them with bicarbonate, maybe even throwing them in the wash and hoping for the best.
We didn’t.
Shoe Chalk was built for climbing shoes, which are arguably worse. Tighter, hotter, worn without socks. So the question was simple: if it can deal with those, what happens when you use it on running shoes?
That’s what we set out to test.
Why running shoes get dirty and smelly
It’s not complicated; it’s just a perfect storm of conditions.
Your feet sweat. Even on an easy run, you’re generating heat, and that moisture has nowhere to go. Running shoes are designed to breathe, but they’re still trapping a lot of that warmth and damp inside the shoe for hours at a time.
That’s where the smell comes from. Not the sweat itself, but what happens after. Bacteria thrive in that kind of environment, warm, dark, slightly damp, and as they break things down, that’s when the odour kicks in.
Then there’s everything else you don’t think about. Road dust, mud, general grime. It gets pulled into the shoe over time and builds up in the lining and footbed. You don’t see it, but it’s there.
And because most running shoes are built with layered fabrics, foam, and glue, once that mix gets in, it tends to stick around.
So it’s not just “a bit of smell.” It’s a build-up of sweat, bacteria, and dirt, slowly turning your shoes into something you’d rather not think about too much.
The problem with typical cleaning methods
This is where most people go wrong, not because they don’t try, but because the options are pretty rubbish.
Sprays are the obvious one. Quick, easy, done in seconds. But they don’t actually solve anything. At best, they cover the smell for a bit. At worst, they just mix with it and make something even more questionable. You’re not removing the cause, you’re just distracting from it.
Then you’ve got the “home remedies.” Bicarbonate, newspaper, freezer tricks, all the usual internet advice. Some of it helps a little, but it’s inconsistent. And more importantly, none of it properly cleans the inside of the shoe. It’s surface-level at best.
Washing them sounds like the proper solution, but that comes with its own problems. Soaking running shoes can mess with the structure, glues weaken, cushioning can degrade. So you end up stuck between options that either:
- don’t really work
- take too much effort
- or risk damaging the shoes
Which is exactly why we started wondering if there was a better way to handle it.
Why we decided to try Shoe Chalk on running shoes
At this point, the gap was obvious. Nothing people normally use actually cleans the inside of a running shoe without some downside.
That’s what made this worth testing.
Shoe Chalk was built for climbing shoes, which, frankly, are worse. Tighter fit, more sweat, no socks half the time. The whole product exists to deal with that exact mix of moisture, bacteria, and trapped dirt, without wrecking the shoe itself.
So the thinking was pretty straightforward: if it can handle that environment, running shoes should be an easier job.
The other thing that made it interesting was how it works. It’s not a spray and it’s not a full soak. You’re creating a cleaning foam inside the shoe, letting it get into the lining, then actually scrubbing and rinsing it out. So you’re not just masking anything, you’re physically removing what’s built up.
And importantly, it’s designed to be gentle. Climbing shoes aren’t cheap, and they’re sensitive to harsh cleaning. The same applies to running shoes, foam, glue, fabric, you don’t want to wreck them just to get rid of a smell.
So rather than guessing, we decided to run a simple test and see what actually happens when you use Shoe Chalk on a pair of well-used running shoes.
The testing process (simple, real, believable)
We didn’t overcomplicate this.
No lab setup, no “controlled conditions”, just a worn pair of running shoes that had clearly seen better days. The kind most people have sitting by the door or in the boot of the car.
The process itself stayed exactly as intended.
A block in each shoe. Warm water added to activate it. Then a short wait, about a minute or two, while it dissolved and built into a foam inside the shoe. That part matters, because it’s what actually gets into the lining rather than just sitting on the surface.
After that, a quick scrub inside. Nothing aggressive, just enough to loosen what’s built up over time. Then a rinse to flush everything out.
That’s it.
No soaking overnight. No washing machine. No weird hacks.
Then we left them to air dry properly, which, again, matters more than people think. Rushing that step is how you end up right back where you started.

Results (cleanliness, smell removal, feel)
This is the bit that matters, did it actually do anything?
Yes. Properly.
The first thing you notice is the smell. Or more accurately, the lack of it. Not replaced, not covered up, just gone. That usual “used running shoe” hit when you pick them up… it wasn’t there anymore.
Inside the shoe felt different too. Cleaner, but also fresher in a way that’s hard to fake. Not perfumed, not artificial, just like the build-up had actually been removed rather than disguised.
Visually, there was a difference as well. The inner lining looked brighter, less dull. You don’t always expect that with running shoes because most of the dirt is hidden, but once it’s gone, it’s obvious.
And importantly, the shoes still felt like the same shoes. No stiffness, no weird texture, no sign that anything had been damaged in the process. Cushioning felt normal, structure intact.
So it wasn’t a subtle improvement. It was the kind where you pick them up and immediately think, yeah, that’s better.
Why it works (gentle, bacteria, materials)
This isn’t magic, it’s just doing the job properly.
Most of the smell problem comes down to bacteria living inside the shoe. Warm, damp, low airflow, it’s exactly what they need. If you don’t deal with that, the smell always comes back.
What makes this different is that it actually gets inside the shoe as a foam, rather than sitting on top or around the edges. That gives it contact with the lining, where the build-up is. When you scrub and rinse, you’re not guessing; you’re physically removing what’s causing the issue.
At the same time, it’s not harsh. That matters more than people think. Running shoes rely on foam, glue, and layered fabrics, hit those with aggressive cleaning and you’ll shorten the life of the shoe pretty quickly.
Here, you’re using water, a light scrub, and something designed to be used on delicate materials. So you get a proper clean without that trade-off.
It’s also why the result feels different. Not coated. Not treated. Just… clean.
Which sounds obvious, but most methods don’t actually get you there.
What this means for runners
Most runners don’t think about cleaning their shoes properly, they just tolerate them getting worse over time.
That usually ends in one of two places: either you keep wearing shoes that smell and feel grim, or you replace them sooner than you should.
This sits somewhere in the middle.
If you can properly clean the inside of your shoes, not just the outside, you’re resetting them. They feel better to wear, they don’t stink up your hallway or car, and you’re not constantly putting your feet back into something that’s full of old sweat and bacteria.
There’s a hygiene angle to it as well. Cleaner shoes mean a better environment for your feet. Less build-up, less irritation, less of that “end of a long run” feeling sticking around after you’ve taken them off.
And practically, it just makes your gear last longer in a usable state. Not in a marketing sense, just in a real, day-to-day way where you’re not thinking, these are getting a bit rank now, I need a new pair.
It’s a small shift, but once you’ve done it once, it’s hard to go back to ignoring it.
Conclusion (simple takeaway, not salesy)
This started as a simple test, not a grand claim.
Running shoes get dirty. They smell. Most fixes either don’t work properly or come with trade-offs. That’s just been the reality for a long time.
What surprised us was how straightforward this was. No complicated process, no harsh treatment, just a proper clean that actually deals with the cause of the problem.
The result isn’t dramatic in a flashy way. It’s just obvious. Shoes that don’t smell, feel better to wear, and aren’t carrying around weeks (or months) of build-up inside them.
If you run regularly, that adds up.
And once you’ve seen the difference, it’s hard to justify going back to doing nothing about it.
